Thank you for your interest in Koa Leaf life coaching! Here are some questions I’m often asked:
What, exactly, is life coaching?
Life coaching is a process of self-discovery in which a trained, objective, nonjudgmental third party helps you figure out your goals, priorities, and stumbling blocks by guiding you in the direction you want to go but that you can’t see clearly on your own. I’ll ask you questions, encourage you, make you focus, and prompt you to look deeply and honestly into yourself. Once we determine your primary goal, I’ll help you create small, achievable action steps that will enable you to reach that goal. I’ll also hold you accountable for carrying them out.
How does it differ from counseling or therapy?
Life coaching is based on the assumption that you already know the answers to your questions, but that you just need help finding them. Although I’ll occasionally share personal experiences when they’re relevant and helpful, my job is not to give advice, but to listen to you — to truly hear what you’re saying — and to act as a guide. Coaching undoubtedly will cause emotional issues to arise and make you aware of self-defeating behaviors that have been holding you back. Some issues, however, are too deep and painful to be helped by coaching. In such cases, you’re better served by a professional therapist, counselor, or psychoanalyst, who use different approaches and skills.
How long does your coaching process take, and what does it cost?
It depends on what you want to achieve. Some goals take longer to reach than others, but plan on at least three months. I offer every potential client a complimentary, introductory coaching session so I can learn what your goals are, you can get a sense of my coaching style, and we can determine whether we’re a good match. If we do decide to work together, then we’ll co-design a custom program that fits your needs and budget.
I’m not sure I’m ready to commit to an entire program. Can I book single coaching sessions?
If I thought it would be helpful, I’d offer single sessions — however, just as booking a couple of sessions at a gym wouldn’t help you achieve a fitness goal, booking a couple of coaching sessions wouldn’t help you achieve whatever transformational goal you’ve come to me for. Maybe this isn’t the right time for you, and that’s okay. If, however, you’re ready to invest in your future and commit to achieving a life transformation you’ve been dreaming about, then I will commit to you to make that dream a reality.
Have you received life coaching yourself?
Of course! I wouldn’t presume to offer my services if I didn’t believe in the value of life coaching. Over a period of several years, I saw a counselor and then a life coach, who helped me with issues related to being a single mother of two teenage boys, dealing with coworkers and bosses who were trying to sabotage me, struggling to fit in as a Hawaiian in Mainland culture, and resolving old, deeply seated feelings of insecurity and low self-esteem that had caused me to sabotage myself for much of my life. Once I started my own practice, I was coached and mentored by another life coach. Like all humans, I’m a continuous work in progress. Nobody ever fully overcomes their old emotional wounds, but I’ve become more self-aware and have learned skills for dealing with them. You can, too!
I know you say “life coaching for women,” but do you also coach men?
I have the utmost respect and admiration for men (I’m married to a good one, I have two fine sons, and I have many male friends), but some experiences and issues are more common to women than to men, just as some experiences and issues are more common to men than to women. I believe that my skills and background are best suited to coaching women — but thank you for asking!
Do I need to live in Portland, Oregon for you to coach me?
Not at all. In fact, most coaching these days is done via phone, Skype, or FaceTime. Wherever you live, I can coach you.
Do you have a support group, membership site, books, videos, or other services?
